History

In 1969 the first Educo school was founded in Canada; subsequently other Educo schools began in the USA, Brazil, Bulgaria, and Germany. Educo Africa was established in 1994 in South Africa. Today all the schools are autonomous but associate under the auspices of the Educo International Alliance.

Background

Educo Africa was initiated at the dawn of South Africa’s post-Apartheid democracy, by four people committed to the transformation process and the critical social issues that were the legacy of the previous era. The four were Valerie Morris, Peri Chickering, Gary Gillespie, and Marian Goodman. Seed capital was donated by the Renaissance Foundation and a generous individual bequest that enabled us to buy equipment and train staff.

Being an autonomous, small and flexible organisation, Educo Africa has been able to respond to the current realities and social needs in South Africa, and adapt its service delivery and sectoral focus for the most direct impact
